Foster/Volunteer shaming I know I’m not the only one who’s felt, the guilt trips, the “why don’t you just keep them?” comments, the subtle digs that we must not love dogs enough because we let them go. But here’s the truth, fostering and volunteering isn’t about keeping every cute dog we see. It’s about preparing them for their forever home or giving them the exposure they need to find their people. It’s about making space, emotionally and physically, to help the next life in need. I’ve heard “I could never do it” so many times. And while I know it comes from a good place, sometimes it feels like an unintended judgment as if our hearts must be harder. If anything, they’re just a little more practiced at breaking, healing, and doing it all over again for the sake of the dog. I promise every single time I’ve let go of a foster I cry like a baby in my car. I promise every dog that I have spent time with who gets euthanized at the shelter because help wasn’t found, holds a place in my heart for the rest of my life, and it hurts so bad. This work isn’t easy. “Just take them for a few days” isn’t always realistic. And if I took every single dog home for just a few days I’d be swimming in dogs. We’re not living on ranches with endless land and supplies. The majority of us are in normal homes with limited space, limited funds, and limitless love. So please remember, every foster and volunteer loves the dogs we help.
