My relatives were part of the coal miner labor movement in western PA. The fight is less than three generations ago and those hard earned labor rights are slipping away faster and faster.

Both unions and black panthers were violently suppressed by capitalists. In the end, capitalists won. Everyone at protests might as well sit down and start studying together because this shits a little more complex than just gathering in a place and shouting about how bad capitalism is. We need more theory, more understanding, less organizing for the sake of organizing, and more focus on specific goals for specific groups.

But they did attack the Black Panthers and if I recall correctly, the government actually started to go after worse when they provided social services. It wasn’t about being armed as much as it was about replacing the dependency on the government system.

The gun rights movement was started by black liberation activists in California in the 1960s. The NRA, reacting to these armed civil rights groups, became the vanguard of LIMITING the rights of citizens to bare arms. They consulted on the Mulford Act for Governor Ronald Reagan to restrict the carrying of loaded firearms in public. It wasn’t until the late 1970s that the NRA did a 180 as part of the southern strategy and to maintain relevance amongst decreasing hunting and shooting sports participation. I’ve always thought that the conservative argument that the second amendment was created to protect ourselves from the government was a bit silly considering the military capabilities of the government. It’s also ahistorical. Just read about the whiskey rebellion. As for a hedge against tyranny, at this point I’m not so sure anymore. I think it’s time people on the left get over there squeamishness about firearms. Do you want to be the only unarmed person in a country where masked men are disappearing people off the streets in an environment where the POTUS deploys the military into cities and describes democrats and liberal “enemies of the country?”

Couldn't be more wrong in 2025. Protest back in 60s, 70s and 80s worked the goal was to get on evening news thats it get on TV and News papers headlines. Today political parties pay attention to Social Medis because it reach so many more people. Protest is a waste of time today. Its just changed with the times.
