On the evening of August 27th at approximately 7:45 PM, the suspect parked his motorbike 30 meters away from the jewelry store. He then proceeded to disguise himself as a Grab driver, wearing a mask and gloves. James approached the store’s outdoor security guard from behind and stuck him in the head with a hammer multiple times. James proceeded to force his way into the store and used the hammer to break the display cases. As the injured guard shouted for help, bystanders attempted to prevent him from leaving by using metal bars to block the door. The suspect managed to force the door open and fled the scene with over 830 million VND (~$33,000 USD) in gold and diamond jewelry. Using CCTV footage and witness statements, authorities determined the suspect was a foreigner. Multiple teams investigated foreign residents in hotels, apartments, and guesthouses, examined motorcycle rental services, and collected video surveillance data. After analyzing the gathered data, investigators identified the suspect’s identity and place of residence. At 10:30 AM on August 27—14 hours after the robbery—he was apprehended at his rented apartment on Phạm Tú Street. At his residence, police discovered the stolen jewelry hidden beneath the ceiling of the bathroom, along with other evidence such as watches and gold bracelets. As of today, all stolen gold and diamond items have been recovered and returned to PNJ. Authorities are continuing the investigation to determine if James is connected to other crimes.
