Elizabeth Gilbert is addicted to love and then turns it into memoirs.

isn't the Cut the magazine that posted the article about the woman who severely neglected her cat after she had her baby?

she is FASCINATING. when it comes to writing and the creative process, she's a sage. when it comes to her own life and relationships, especially romantic relationships, she's so chaotic and messy. I would never want her life but I love that she's out there and telling us all about it.

This essay shocks me none. When Liz announced this love affair on insta back then it screamed messy. She’d already written about her messy love life and was at it again. I like her writing but the way she wrote about love lacked groundedness (I don’t think that’s a real word but imma stick with it). Glad this experience seemed to be a wake up call for her. It’s hard to be human.

One thing I love about Liz is that she isn’t trying to make anyone (including herself) look good, she’s trying by to make them look human (and messy) but still find beauty in the messiness. That’s what I’ve always taken from her work. There’s no heroes

I just wrote about this on my substack and the kinda ick it gave me of her sharing all this about Rayya who obviously can’t consent as she’s dead but also what line is there in these situations when it comes to memoirs

I think the fact that Gilbert is as honest about herself as Raya, to the point of it making her look bad and possibly reshaping her reputation, says a lot about her willingness to try and tell the truth of a messy situation.

Anne Pachett’s novel about her friendship with Lucy Grealy is a great one to check out: Truth and Beauty. Lucy’s famous memoir autobiography of a face was heartbreaking and did feel weird to read about Lucy from Anne’s POV. Honestly Patchett is an incredible writer and that book led me to her other works.

I love the way you’re sharing this and considering both sides. It feels like there isn’t a right or wrong but that it’s important to acknowledge that there’s something muddy about it all. I completely agree that people should be able to tell their accounts and their stories but when the other person can’t speak to it it can feel icky. Especially with kids I think.
