Also “hard work” doesn’t necessarily mean productive or very valuable work. Lots of people work hard in low skill or low value things that don’t pay. Work smarter before working harder.

This applies in the software field heavily. When I first started, I made near 0 impact. Now, with the deep knowledge I aquired, I am pushing magnitudes of impact over those who don’t have my understanding of concepts and its not possible for them to compete anytime soon.

I think this question creates a Dunning-Kruger like effect where the hardest workers see their flaws and say yes they could technically work harder. So a survey wouldn’t show a Pareto distribution of effort, it would reflect cognitive bias.

You cannot equate hard work with high output. The highest output is likely generated in a few extremely high productivity jobs, even if the people in those jobs don't work particularly hard.

Output can be hard work though. Some people aren't smart enough to be the "hard workers". The work they do though is "hard" to them. Asking a kindergardener to read a chapter book would technically be hard for them. Well asking a... by industry standard "unskilled laborer" to do a managers job would technically be "hard" for them to. Idk I guess what im saying is it's all relative. Forgive my typos and imperfect pernouciatuons.

Hard work hurts and only a small percentage of hard workers achieve what they want. Better to just accept your place in the world and do only what is necessary

I really like a Sam Altman quote that you can really work hard but not improving at all, Just creating a lot of movement doesn't guarantee success, It needs a direction. I think that's the case for most people they create a lot of movement (work hard by theyr evaluation) but they still don't see the desired outcome due to lack of correct direction / goal setting.
