@alicescounselingcorner: When tragic events happen, like the recent Minneapolis shooting, our kids may hear, see, and feel more than we realize. Children and teens often look to parents and caregivers to help them make sense of what feels scary or confusing. Here are some gentle ways to support them: Start the conversation – Ask what they’ve heard and how they feel. Don’t assume they know nothing. Be honest but age-appropriate – Share the truth in a way they can understand, and avoid unnecessary graphic details. Validate feelings – Let them know it’s normal to feel sad, scared, or angry. Model calm – Children pick up on your reactions. Show them it’s okay to have difficult feelings. Offer comfort and routine – Keeping normal routines helps children feel grounded and secure. If your child is struggling to cope, consider reaching out to a counselor or mental health professional for extra support. Our kids don’t need perfect answers—they need connection, reassurance, and space to process.
