Breaking News: “The Govt Have Abandoned Us”: Imokun Residents in Eredo, Epe Cry Out, Lament 1 Year Without Electricity as Over 800 Households Remain in Darkness –Lagos Reporters Residents of Imokun in Eredo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Epe, Lagos State, have cried out over a year-long blackout that has crippled businesses and daily life, leaving more than 800 households stranded in darkness. Since September 2023, the community has been without electricity following the breakdown of its only power source, a 500 kVA transformer. Despite repeated complaints and appeals, the situation remains unresolved, forcing many to endure unbearable living conditions or relocate. Speaking on behalf of the community, Comrade Olufowobi Eniafe lamented that the failed transformer has paralyzed social and economic activities in the largely student-dominated area. “This is the twelfth month without electricity. The transformer serves more than 800 houses. A private company told us repairs would cost N8 million, which is far beyond what ordinary residents here can raise,” he said. The prolonged blackout has worsened hardship, with households spending heavily on fuel and gas as alternatives. “People are struggling under the current economic realities. Businesses are shutting down because most shop owners cannot fuel generators. In my house alone, we spend around N8,000 every night on fuel just to have light,” Eniafe explained. While Eredo LCDA Chairman, Hon. Monsuru Akinloye, donated a new transformer to another part of the community in June 2024, residents of Imokun say they have been abandoned by their elected representatives. “Apart from the chairman’s intervention, none of our legislators have answered our letters, calls, or messages. People here feel abandoned, like we don’t matter,” Eniafe stressed. As the blackout stretches into its second year, the community is appealing directly to the Lagos State government and well-meaning Nigerians for urgent intervention. “If light is restored today, thousands of people will breathe a sigh of relief. It will bring back life to this community,” Eniafe added. Lagos Reporters will continue to follow up on this story and bring updates on any intervention from government authorities or stakeholders.
