I forgot who said it but someone said it’s an education thing. Rappers back in the day had educations. Not all of them but a lot did.

But another issue is it requires so much output to get attention these days, also spending lots of time and energy on something nobody will listen to is harsh , as a producer / artist I find a decent balance but getting caught up “writing your magnum opus” is just an inefficient use of time and creativity unless you have that fan base like Kendrick that will appreciate your work

having a good grasp on what to write would definitely have a sold grasp on reading. bringing up Pac just solidifies that. Afeni used to sit him down and read in timeout as punishment as a kid. Eminem, one of the greatest wordsmiths on earth used to read the dictionary to broaden his vocabulary. catching a beat and flowing is one skill. putting words between those pockets is a different skill set in and of itself.

I was just thinking this about this topic !! A lot of rappers back in the day used to go through the whole process. Journal, produce a rhyme scheme, hum a tune, transform their journaling into lyrics, make the lyrics fit in the best way, etc.. Rappers these days rush it and just write down what’s trendy just to make a hit. I also think the labels have an effect on this as well. They give the artists time limits to get work out, so they don’t have a choice but to rush their songs.

I also think streaming and social media has something to do with it. you HAVE to stay relevant so you HAVE to drop new music constantly or you'll fad away. ppl have short attention spans and if you dont have something new coming out every few months they just move on. doesn't really matter if the project is good as long as ppl are talking about it
