independent play is a skill. it doesn't always come naturally - toddlers need some support & guidance to get there!! here are 5 ways to support your toddler's independent play: 1. start with small expectations
independent play might look like 5–10 minutes at first! they'll gradually build on this & eventually play for longer periods of time. 2. use intentional screen time (like Pok Pok)
not all screen time works against independent play, it’s about how it’s used. apps like Pok Pok are designed to feel more like digital toys than fast-paced games.
 3. limit toy options !!!!
if i can convince you to do ONE thing - let it be this. too many toys can be overwhelming. providing fewer toys will actually lead to MORE play. you don't have to throw away all your toys, but you SHOULD put most of them away. rotating toys every so often helps toddlers stay engaged longer.
 4. choose open-ended toys
things like blocks, animals, cars, balls - toys that have more than one purpose / task. open-ended toys encourage imagination and lead to longer play.
 5. don't interrupt !!!
this is the hardest part. if your child is focused, try not to jump in or narrate constantly. avoid saying

 5. don't interrupt !!!
this is the hardest part. if your child is focused, try not to jump in or narrate constantly. avoid saying "good job!!!!" when they are actively engaged with a toy - we mean well by doing this, but it can honestly break their focus & engagement.
your child can explore at their own pace, make choices, and stay engaged without needing you to guide every step — which actually supports the same skills as independent play with physical toys: focus, creativity, and problem-solving.
independent play takes practice, too 🫂 #momlife #motherhoodunfiltered #momtruths #toddlermom #relatable Partnering with Pok Pok
