Relative to grain and oilseed futures, fertilizer prices have risen to their highest level since 2016. The majority of US potash imports originate from Canada and are exempt from tariffs under the USMCA agreement. However, tariffs on shipments from countries such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia have tacked on significant costs. Republican Senator Chuck Grassley has argued that cutting fertilizer import tariffs would provide the quickest relief for farmers already squeezed by poor markets and rising input costs. It’s who will blink first. Inputs naturally have to do some realigning. They may continue to trend where they are taking a larger % of the producers $1, but a market can’t go negative for an infinite amount of time.
