Corvids have absolutely no connection with foreshadowing unexpected death or the Devil! And thirdly, these are not only the smartest birds but also one of the smartest animals. They also would have scavenged carrion. And to put it plainly, from the 13th-17th century when superstition was at its peak, corvids would have been the most intelligent animal people would regularly encounter and their intelligence and morbid diet would have frightened and almost threatened them, creating this deathy reputation. This was emphasised and fantasised during the gothic victorian period.
