@sartorbespoketailors: Seersucker originated in ancient India, with its name derived from the Persian words shïr o shakkar, meaning “milk and sugar,” representing its smooth and gritty textures. The fabric traveled to the West via Persian and Indian trade routes, gaining popularity among 19th-century British colonists in India for its breathability. It became a staple in the West, especially in the American South, as a lightweight alternative to heavy wool suits and was popularized by brands like Haspel in the early 1900s Sartor bespoke suits in the heart of Dubai, Discover the perfect fit, experience tailored luxury with Sartor, creating anything you desire in mens fashion. #bespoke #suits #mensfashion #dubai #sartor

Amelia :
Seersucker might be iconic in the south & east where it’s hot & steamy but they did not invent it. It’s like paisley, cashmere, & lightweight cotton prints invented by another culture & given a new anglo name.

Thank you so much for this video. I asked a professor at LSU who is an “expert” about the history of seersucker when I bought a suit down south and he told me some flabbergasting lies 🤣

As an American historian, I was taught that seer sucker was an Indian fabric, just like you are saying. So have hope, we are not all brainwashed

It’s also named shekaar (sugar in Farsi) because the color originally used to be more tan like molasses / sugar; and the other color was white like milk (sheer) so together sheer shekaar

Wow. I knew about madras fabrics because Jamaica always credited Indians for bringing this to Jamaica but I never knew about seersucker. Makes sense though. Thanks for this.

I think it was just one weird story with one guy claiming it originated in the US. I’ve only ever heard that it was an Indian fabric.

I live in the American south and had NO IDEA. I even wore a seersucker dress to my rehearsal dinner! I’m so glad to know it’s real origins so I can be respectful while I wear my seersucker pieces.

countries don't "steal" when they copy a product. the product isn't removed from the home country, it's just produced elsewhere

I think apart from wool fabrics like tartan and tweed, pretty much all the best fabrics come from Asia.
