The people of New Orleans are incredible. The last time I visited I could see the steely commitment to the city residents have to this jewel of a city.

I always describe my hometown of New Orleans like this: overflowing with cultural wealth yet starved for resources. Scraping by with crumbling schools, neglected streets, and battered infrastructure yet still a masterpiece painted on a canvas of scarcity. She’ll break your heart, embrace you in her humid hug, and make you whole, all at once. And for those who did return, a deeper question emerged: What does it mean to be from a city that isn’t the same anymore? Many New Orleanians developed what sociologists call a “diaspora identity.” Even after coming home, we carried a sense of being split between the New Orleans we remembered, the one that remained, and the places we had been scattered to. Katrina didn’t just topple buildings; it fractured social bonds, reshaped culture, altered demographics, and left psychological scars. It uprooted a community’s very sense of itself.
