this should 100% be fully transparent to the kids! If you have to be trained to ignore their cries, they should absolutely know not to rely on their cries for help.

Tv shows always portray a kid locked out 🥺. Hasn’t there also been real footage of this happening to kids during school shootings? That’s so scary

I hate that they don't inform the parents, but luckily I work at the local hospital so we would be notified in the case of a real event. And I would be out that door not caring if I lost my job or not.

I had a teacher who told would scan the hall before locking the door, but she told us to run as far away from the school as possible and even told us the plan to escape through the ceiling need be. She had bought a ladder that she kept in her room for that reason..

Yes, the teachers could lose the degrees and everything but the kids can lose their life's.

At this point at a minimum why do we not have a police officer and metal detector at the front door?

I tell my students that if it were ever real, and we aren’t in a locked room, run. Leave campus. Don’t wait for me. Get away. If you’re able to escape then escape and don’t hide. Our schools are telling us this is the plan now. If the intruder isn’t on our hallway when they tell us where they are, then take our kids and run out of the building into the woods

My teachers really care about us so they always tell us outright to go hide somewhere else and not to come back to the room

I found out via a local news alert that flashed on my phone that said cops were rushing to my kid’s school. A lot of people don’t realize that’s how they’ll find out. Nobody from the school is calling you. You’ll find out from the local news first when they pick it up on a scanner. I recommend everyone has their local news alerts set. My kid helped a teacher barricade the library door with a table and then they crouched behind a bookcase. Several of her friends were stuck in the hallway when the classrooms closed and blocked the doors. It wasn’t a drill. It was a real event. When I got to the school, the media was there, the cops were there, the national guard was there. One of my kid’s friends told her what happened and that the person had jumped out a window. She texted me and told me she was OK. I texted her back and said I was in line to sign her out. She had to stay in her hiding spot for over an hour until I showed my ID to sign her out. The National guard escorted us to our car. The person was still out there, so the entire neighborhood was on lockdown. We were told to go right home and lock our doors and windows. When I was in line, the media was harassing us - Was your kid near where it happened? Almost like they hoped they saw it. When the kids came out, the media went right up to them. They were hugging each other and saying “Today wasn’t the day, I guess!” Then they were expected to go back to school in 2 days like nothing happened. There is a cop permanently assigned to the school now. Not every school has that luxury. Set your local news alerts because, if something goes down at your kid’s school, the news is going to tell you first. The school isn’t calling, nor should they, while they’re making sure your kids are safe.
