USS William D. Porter (DD-579) was a Fletcher-class destroyer in service with the United States Navy during World War II, best known for a series of unusual and unlucky incidents that earned it the reputation of “the unluckiest ship” in U.S. Navy history. 🚢 Launched on September 27, 1942, the ship was named after Rear Admiral William D. Porter. ⚓ On its very first mission in November 1943, while escorting the battleship USS Iowa carrying President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Tehran Conference, a torpedo was accidentally launched during a gunnery exercise, heading straight for the presidential ship. The torpedo missed, but the incident led to the entire crew being questioned. 🎯 Later mishaps included accidentally firing a shell into the backyard of a base commander in the Aleutian Islands and several smaller accidents. 💥 On June 10, 1945, off Okinawa, one of the ship’s own depth charges accidentally detonated beneath the hull after being unintentionally released, causing severe damage. The crew was evacuated, and William D.
