One of the most tumultuous royal marriages. Juan Carlos and Sofia of Spain met in 1954 during a cruise organized in Greece by Queen Frederika, Sofia’s mother. This cruise, often called the “cruise of the kings,” brought together several young members of European royal families in a discreet attempt to encourage matrimonial alliances between royal houses. At the time, Juan Carlos was a young Spanish prince living in exile (as the Spanish monarchy had been abolished after the civil war), while Sofia was a princess of Greece and Denmark. They grew closer over time, but their relationship didn’t become official right away. They saw each other again at various royal and family events in the following years. It was in 1961, at the wedding of the Duchess of Kent in London, that they met again and their relationship became more serious. Shortly after, they announced their engagement. They were married on May 14, 1962, in Athens. Before the wedding, Sofia converted from Orthodox Christianity (the dominant religion in Greece) to Catholicism, the official religion of Spain. She also changed the spelling of her name from “Sophia” to the Spanish version, “Sofía.” Their marriage symbolized the union of two royal families in exile and paved the way for Juan Carlos’s return to the Spanish political scene. He would become king in 1975, after the death of Franco. #CapCut #fyp #royals #royalfamily #kingfelipevi #spanishroyalfamily #princesssofia #princessleonor #princessleonorofspain #queensofiaofspain #kingjuancarlosofspain #kingfelipeofspain #queenletizia #queenletiziaofspain #greekroyals
