Oh yeah. When I first traveled abroad to the Netherlands, I immediately noticed how ppl adjusted their behavior when they realized I was American. I waived that Blue Gold like it was a black card. I should be ashamed, but I wasn’t. I’m sorry. I never experienced that in America. I even had better treatment than my White Blonde Hair Blue Eyed friend in Japan. It was a fascinating experience.

I’m AA and lived in Italy. They HATE Africans & often assumed I was African (my natural braids added to the confusion). Same as OP I could see the switch when they found out I’m AA. I always found that so insulting and worried what the Africans went through trying to live there.

Black Americans have privilege outside of America because we’re just visiting. We don’t try to overstay our visas. We’re not fleeing or bringing drugs to the country. Also black women that are not American are usually ladies of the night.

I never feel American until I travel outside the States. It's really weird when the locals are nicer after they heard my accent. TBF, I pretended to be Canadian because I feel like most countries have a justified dislike of America.

I love my American privilege in Europe. It’s the closest I can get to white privilege in the U.S. I don’t have it in the Caribbean tho.

I still don’t understand the UK portion though. It’s like we’re always on their mind but we don’t think of them. It’s a one sided beef

This happened to my mom and I in Australia! Refused to help us in the store and then they heard us talking and said they thought we were African so they didn’t speak to us…crazy that they admitted it so openly

Went to Brazil in 2014. I was studying abroad and decided to go to a World Cup game. Phone was pickpocketed but I didn't know that at the time so I was searching around for it. Some white Argentines thought I was trying to rob them and the Brazilian police whisked me away to the depths of the stadium. When they realized I was a Black American and not Afro-Brazilian, their whole demeanor changed. Dusted me off and helped me look for my phone and cussed out the Argentines for me. What if I had been Brazilian? Mind you, the cops were Black Brazilians themselves 🤦🏿‍♂️

Yep, I’m Nigerian American but my parents have Nigerian accents and it was jarring to watch my parents be treated worse than us in Italy

I had a similar experience years ago when I was in Paris. I was hanging out with an Algerian guy and the disparity in how we were treated was crazy.

Yes, that’s very true, I’m French-American and when I go to any city outside of Paris, I get “mobbed” especially by the yong who are obsessed with American culture.

As soon as they hear you speaking…game changer. I’ve heard people walking towards us and literally saying “Americano” in passing and silence! It’s like magic!

Good, black Americans earned it. If they say no Africans you best believe my black American asz still trying to get in there😂 The older generation just stuck on pan Africanism, I'm taking my blessing have they come😭✊🏾
