There is genuinely no stronger evidence that two people share a brain than when something happens in a room, you immediately look at each other, and both of you already know. 😭 Nobody said anything. There was no signal. You didn’t even consciously decide to make eye contact. Your head just automatically turned toward the one person you knew would have noticed the exact same thing, and of course they’re already looking at you. That’s when it’s over. Because now you’re both trying desperately not to laugh, which somehow makes everything ten times funnier. You look away because you know maintaining eye contact for another half second is going to destroy you, but then you make the terrible decision to look back and they’re still fighting for their life too. 😭 And the funniest part is everybody else in the room has absolutely no idea what’s happening. Somebody eventually asks, “What are you guys laughing at?” and you can’t even explain it because half the humor was the fact that neither of you needed an explanation in the first place. Sometimes it’s not even something objectively funny. It’s just a facial expression somebody made, an oddly specific phrase, something awkward that happened, or a tiny detail that only the two of you would find hilarious because of some completely unrelated inside joke from six months ago. That’s one of the best parts of becoming genuinely close with somebody. Eventually you develop this weird silent language. You know what certain looks mean. You can tell when they’re uncomfortable, when they’re trying not to laugh, when they want to leave, or when somebody just said something that’s definitely getting discussed in the car afterward. One glance can communicate an entire paragraph. And I think that’s why these tiny interactions can make a friendship or relationship feel so special. Anyone can have a conversation with you, but there are only a handful of people who become so familiar with the way your mind works that you can communicate without saying anything at all. It’s like having a private group chat happening entirely through eye contact. And sometimes the funniest moment of your entire night isn’t the thing that happened—it’s looking across the room and realizing your person saw it too.
