Yeah but a lot of routers will load balance or switch between the primary and backup DNS server so I would often get ads that would come through the backup when the pihole blocked them. Did you find a way around that?

my biggest issue with pi hole isn't with the service itself.... it's the fact that windows never fails over properly and chooses to keep trying to use the custom server even though it's not pinging

I have never once, in the last twenty years, had a problem with my ad blocker when it updates. Seems like a skill issue.

I’m new to this so does that mean if I implement this on my home wifi, the YouTube app won’t have ads anymore on my tv? Cuz i have adblocker for my pc but the tv still has ads.

traffic WON'T get through pihole, only DNS requests. I have a raspberry pi 2 with 100mb/s and I don't have any issue with my gigabit connection. you shouldn't set a backup DNS as your modem will redirect to it request that pihole answers with blank ip (the whole point of pi hole)

My roommate can’t use something like that with her job. Is there a way to limit it on specific computers?

It is not an ad blocker for every website or app. Only if the ads are served from a dedicated domain, pihole can block it. You will still have ads on some apps or websites, but it will work for things like YouTube 👍

A lot of websites can detect your Adblock and make you turn it off. Does the pyhole have the same issue? Cause it seems like it would be pretty inconvenient to turn off

Because i am the only tech guy in the family and also manage our home's network, i set up an old laptop i had laying around as a pihole adblocker running a barebones debian with the pihole scripts and utilities. Sadly because our isp router wont allow setting dns to an internal ip and does not support 192.168.x.x ips i also have pihole as my dhcp server which does bring in some risks but for now its working fine, might upgrade to a edgerouter or whatever in the future and let that handle dhcp and those often allow changing dns to some internal adress. I blocked some ad and malicious domains and even managed to block a phishing domain not so long ago because my parents probably clicked on some suspicious link but it just broke the connection to that domain. Sadly it wont block youtube ads but thats because i believe, ads are from the same domain the video stream comes from so you either block both or none...

If you set a secondary dns, ad blocking is effectively thwarted. All blocked ads then get resolved by that secondary dns.

I'm building a new pc, and I'm currently on the fence between the arc b580 and the rx 7700 xt, because I know that the b580 has problems with lower powered cpus, but the extra like 50-70 bucks I could save by buying it could allow me to get a better CPU
