I work in the front office of a junior high…the policy is that cell phones are put away from 8:05-3:05 (school hours)…the amount of parents who are interrupting their child’s learning on the daily is ASTOUNDING!! How about we don’t connect with our kids unless there is an emergency. Let them learn!!!

How about, we get rid of guns and the threat to our children being shot in school and then we can ask them to put their phones away?

I’d be fine with it if we didn’t have kids being slaughtered every day in school

Ep :
My daughter’s high school had the same role that cell phones had to be in the locker. Every single kid in her high school put the phone on do not disturb and left it in their damn backpack. As long as it was off and silent and not being used they really did not care.

Nobody's business :
Phones don't stop guns. I don't understand everyone saying that's why they want kids to have them. In an emergency, kids need to be focused and listening to instructions from adults.

I don’t worry about needing to contact my kids during their school day, I worry about my kids needing to contact me- especially during an emergency and not being able to

Why can’t they just text them and they’ll get it after school?

We survived many years without cellphones. The kids will be fine! 🙄 Just like any “business” you call the main line and they get a message to the person you’re trying to reach. My high school had that as an elective (office aide) delivering messages or retrieving kids if the parents were there to pick them up. It’s not that big a deal.

It is ALWAYS the grownups! The students will adapt, they will be focused and actually develop social skills!!

Have you read the ban by NYS? it seems like it's completely unenforceable. It's a ban, not a law, nothing illegal or criminal about. They can't suspend kids. The ban says parents have to have a way to contact kids. I'm sure if a parent went to the school and said my kid is going to have there phone, the school probably won't fight it. I'm waiting for the doctor's notes to start coming in, phone for emotional support. I'm sure half the schools aren't going to actually enforce it, as long as the kids aren't using during class.

These parents are out of control and we wonder why the kids are the way they are. Obviously asking kids to put the phones away hasn’t worked the last few years. So everyone suggesting that now needs to use their brain. This is better for the kids. Let kids be kids. Let kids socialize. My bff is a receptionist at a school and parents will call and tell them who to go home with daily. Like HELLO figure it out before you drop your child off. People are selfish and entitled. I hate Hochul but I do agree this is good even though it makes me nervous since I have a child at school

Parents contacting their kids during class is my second most common distraction. They will call/text incessantly until the kid responds. And it’s always about BS. One mom called a kid 3x and then when the kid finally answered she was asking if he wanted chicken nuggets for dinner.

you dont work with kids. some parents are crazy. helicopter parents that need to micromanage their child and be in contacted 100% of the time. some are even buying their kids flip phones to get around the cellphone ban.

There were so many generations of Kids who managed to get through the day without their parents having constant access to them. You’re right, if it’s an emergency, you can call the office. Otherwise, you can wait until 3 o’clock.

I’m pretty sure most kids have access to a lab top or tablet at school. Just email them

For me it’s not trying to get ahold of them… it’s more if an actual school emergency happens (intruders, etc)

I couldn’t do it, if there is a shooter, I want my voice to be the last thing my child hears. So happy my kids are grown

I think of myself as someone who is overly attached to and protective of my kids, but so far to seventh grade, we haven’t needed to contact them during their workday. I tell my older kid that she has a phone (a watch) so that if she wants to go do something afterschool, she doesn’t have to come all the way home to tell me.

My mom is a retired NY high school secretary that subs for secretaries nearly everyday now since they can never find and keep new secretaries. So yeah, who’s going to man this voicemail line? Sounds disastrous.
