@kamredlawsk: Ugly cry time. 5 days until my debut picture book, Yumi and Monster, hits the shelves/ships!! Of course, I know what my book looks like from creating the art to seeing the proofs, but it is quite different than seeing your story bound up in a sweet little package. Before my flight to Japan I had received my Yumi and Monster copy. Japan was the first to see my book outside of my Yumi team. I was in the middle of a second house flood renovation in 2 1/2 years, frantically trying to complete reconstruction while packing for a month-long trip to Asia. Then, Yumi and Monster arrived, and in the echoes of my empty home & freshly painted walls, I opened my book. It’s been a journey of loneliness, grief, self-discovery, depression, confusion, contemplation, exploration, insecurity, fear, imagination, love, emptiness, creativity, and perspective in the form of winding tales of my mind. Someone once told me that when you put a book out, it’s out there forever. There was some fear. Especially since it’s not just a story; it’s my story. A very personal one. If you happen to find me on the book trail after it releases on September 2, you may experience a few tears during a reading. At my first book reading that was in Japan, for fellow GNE Myopathy patients, I suddenly cried while sharing. Some are good at holding their emotions back, but I haven’t been able to for a very long time. Jason always tells me I’m a terrible liar; everything about me and my emotions is written all over my face. I can’t say what I don’t mean. I mean this: I hope my little book will speak to children & the child within us as adults, and that it will bring some comfort… to know you’re not alone.
