@furahameansjoy: And no Jay Versace didn’t say South Sudanese models particularly but we all know South Sudanese models are the Africans he’s referring to —- doesn’t even bother saying the country when that’s common knowledge that of Africans, South Sudanese models dominate sighhh @Marissa Kerri✨ @The Model Gene #jayversace #southsudanesemodels #modelingindustry #southsudan #modelscouting
They treated Alek Wek and Ajak Deng sooo badly. Ajak had a literal breakdown on her instagram story a few years ago. I hope she is doing better these days

Even in most of the magazine covers of South Sudanese models, you can see the editors DARKEN their skin to the point that you can't see their facial features, only the clothes. They use them like mannequins. I don't see the white models getting the same treatment

And the only thing they find worth capitalizing on is our skin, going so far as to Darken these beautiful women’s complexion so much so you can’t even see their features, and they always keep dark skin models bald Like whyyyy??? They don’t even think Afro hair is worth exploiting😭😭

Yesss! Bell hadid and Alex Consani are human and people want to relate to them but Anok yai is kinda seen as a lotus flower, only to be stared at and “consumed” for the visual satisfaction of the people who fetishise her.

This also extends to that photographer that uses south Sudanese models as shadows in his images

“Wow she doesn’t look real” is such a dehumanizing statement sometimes. Because it’s not about their ethereal beauty but an exoticized perspective

I wonder if this also fits into literature and how often a black female character's physical beauty is described using food and/or literal associations like chocolate, caramel etc whereas a white female character's beauty is relayed in more abstract/metaphorical descriptions.

Black models aren’t even dominating the industry, it’s infuriating in part because 1.) the fetishizing of Sudanese and other African models and 2.) he’s expressing annoyance about them dominating the industry without even considering how they’re treated in this industry

His beef is with the industry… that’s what the whole tweet meant. He just wasn’t politically correct in messaging

What they’re doing with South Sudanese models is the same pipeline they had with Eastern European YT models in the early 2000s…

Um you’re deflecting. South Sudanese models make up such a small percentage of models because black people in general are extremely underrepresented in the modeling world. Take that small number and slash it by how few women who look like everyday Black American/Caribbean/West African women are represented and you get even less representation. And by “looking African” we mean features that only South Sudanese models have, not the rest of the diaspora

1. he wasn’t bothered & his tweet didn’t insinuate privilege at all… 2. yes there is a small amount of sudanese/african models but of the percentage of african/african american models, the majority are african “looking” and that was his point.

Exactly, because if you look at regular commercial modelling, brown skinned women are constantly represented! Whether it be on advertisements or in the mall, i never see the dark skins everyone’s claims to be overly represented. The dark skins are only used in high fashion for fetishisation purposes

I don’t understand why people want to take space from south sudanese models when the majority is still white we can advocate for more black models who look different, we don’t need to compete with each other

I love your take but wasn’t this what Jay was trying to say? That South Sudanese models are scouted in particular to be an anomaly? Why is what he said wrong when you spent this entire video proving him right?

Yup yup YUP! I made a video about the hyperfixation of dark skin black women for this VERY reason. You know it’s not genuine because they never talk about anything other than their skin when describing their beauty whereas with other women, they can mention what specific trait about them is beautiful.
