You didn’t fasten the shingles on the nailing strip. Each shingle is designed to be fastened about half an inch to an inch above the “reveal” part of the shingle. Nowadays you might hear that part of the shingle called the “Z-strip” or the “nailing strip” the point is, use staples or nails (couldn’t care less in this scenario), but make sure you put them in the correct location on the shingle. If you don’t, the fasteners are functionally useless.
