Evelyn had spent months telling herself that adopting another dog at 80 probably wasn't sensible. She lived alone now, and life had become much quieter since her husband passed away. They'd always had dogs in the house, but after losing their last one, Evelyn wasn't sure she had it in her to start again. A puppy would be too much, and she worried that a shelter might think she was simply too old to adopt. Still, she missed having someone there. Eventually her daughter convinced her to visit the local shelter. Evelyn made one thing clear before they went inside: she wasn't promising to take a dog home. She only wanted to look. Then one of the employees mentioned Charlie. The Dalmatian had been at the shelter for a while and wasn't doing particularly well with all the noise and unfamiliar people. He wasn't aggressive and had never caused any trouble. Whenever somebody stopped at his kennel, though, Charlie usually moved toward the back and waited for them to leave. Evelyn asked if she could meet him. When the kennel door was opened, Charlie didn't get up. He stayed on the gray blanket in the back corner with his body low and his eyes fixed on the elderly woman standing outside. Evelyn didn't walk straight toward him. She stood at the entrance for a moment and looked at him. "You don't have to be scared, sweetheart."Charlie kept watching her. Evelyn took one small step inside. At 80, getting down onto a concrete floor wasn't easy anymore, so she held onto the metal frame with one hand and used the other to steady herself against her leg. It took her a little while to lower herself onto one knee. Charlie still hadn't moved. Once Evelyn was settled, she stopped completely. She didn't reach across the kennel or try to pull him out of the corner. She simply held one hand near her knee and waited. "Come here, Charlie.!" For several seconds, the Dalmatian stayed on his blanket. Then he stood up. His first steps were careful. Charlie moved away from the back wall, stopped halfway across the kennel and watched Evelyn again. She stayed exactly where she was. Eventually he started walking again. When Charlie reached her, he sniffed her hand first. Evelyn still didn't grab him. A moment later, he moved closer on his own and pressed his spotted head against her chest. That was when she finally put her arm around him. "Today, I'm taking you home." What Charlie couldn't have known was that Evelyn had already made the decision before she knelt down. After hearing about him and spending some time talking with the shelter staff, she'd completed the paperwork. She hadn't gone into that kennel to decide whether Charlie was good enough for her. She'd gone in to tell him he was leaving. Later, Evelyn's daughter asked what had changed her mind after she'd spent so long insisting she was too old for another dog. Evelyn said she'd been thinking about it backward. She had been worried about how many years she could give a dog. Sitting on that kennel floor, looking at Charlie alone on his blanket, she started thinking about what they could give each other right now. That evening, Charlie left the shelter. His new bed was waiting beside Evelyn's chair. And for the first time in a long while, neither of them went to sleep in an empty home. Do you think 80 is too old to adopt, or would you have taken Charlie home too?
