Italian Americans vs. Italian. Modern day Italians are a modern European culture with regional differences dominated by the North. Italian Americans are a mix of mostly Southern Italian culture from the turn of the century that Americanized.

Even as an Immigrant myself who left South Africa at 23, I'm 27 now. The culture feels so totally different to me now. If I don't go on Tiktok for example after a couple weeks I completely lose sense of what's happening. Even things like slang and how language has evolved.

there’s an episode of the sopranos where the main crew go back to italy that’s a great example of this

This is such an amazing topic! As our parents pass away and we lose those ties to back home (eg. No immediate desire to build and return); I wonder what will happen then. Language won’t be passed down (already isn’t) so we stay the “summers”; miss new music; recent news etc etc

💯. I left Ireland in 1994. That culture (both thankfully and nostalgically) no longer exists. Mainly because of economic development

the diaspora gap is painfully obvious if you look at northern america. Irish Americans, German Americans, English Americans, often come across like people from old country from the 50s and 60s because at the time europe was overtly religious and had a lot of backward regressive almost fascistic views whereas actual europeans today are very far from that and very progressive especially the germans and irish . This creates a real dissonance for Americans traveling back to the old country when they realize that they can't relate to ‘irish-ness’ ‘german-ness’ ‘english-ness’ as it is today.

Im black, but I grew up near a very large Irish American community. Very interesting seeing them grasping to hold on to a culture that no longer exist. I do applaud them for keeping it. They are super conservative

very interesting case of this in Nigeria. a lot of Igbo people moved to the north 100s of years ago and till this day they speak an older less English influenced version of the language.
