brad nails are a thing. smallest of holes that can easily be filled in and painted. waaaaaaaaaay cheaper.

The benefit to a traditional trim nail is having a “head” on it, to help prevent trim from separating from the wall. Even that doesn’t always work, I have a hard time believing this would do better. Also, walls aren’t always perfectly straight. Theres no pressure point to keep the base tight.
