@beyondflorida: Plans are moving forward to sink the SS United States off the coast of Florida, but at what cost to our oceans? Environmental experts warn that toxic materials still onboard, including asbestos, PCBs, and zinc chromate, could leach into the water and spark a devastating marine die-off. Why not keep the ship afloat and turn it into a museum that EVERYONE can access - rather than ust a few scuba divers? What is their obsession with destroying everything about Florida?

These ppl need to be held accountable. Just like in the 80’s when they allowed Goodyear to dump 100’s and thousands of their tires off the Florida coast to create a fake reef and all it did was destroy the Florida coast and Goodyear ran off more rich and not held accountable for their trash. I smell corruption

She actually was in Virginia from 1969-1996. My grandfather went to the auction of her interiors. I have a few pieces.

Ship diving will increase tourism to that county. That’s all they care about.

This isn't building a healthy reef.
It's just dumping more of our garbage in the ocean.

I’ve been on this ship multiple times over this process and I can tell you that this actually isn’t true. They’ve been spending months stripping every ounce of toxins that you’ve mentioned not just to pass EPA standards to safely deploy, but to do it more environmentally responsible than previous ships like the nearby Oriskiny (which has not caused marine die offs). I’ve seen this ship getting cleaner and cleaner over the months. It’s meticulous. -and it’s not just for divers, but fishing. Happy to answer any other questions
