My dad made it out OK and is now enjoying his retirement. He always wore a respirator and was “that guy” when it came to safety

There are personal protective equipment made specifically for this purpose. If you are an employee, ask for them, even through a union if there is a need. If you are a freelancer, don't use the cost as an excuse because €2,500 of equipment is cheaper than thousands of euros of cancer treatments that you will then have to pay.

Refuse to do the work without proper equipment. What your boss gonna do? Fire you? Nah, finding a good welder is way more expensive than buying proper PPD for him.
