I’ll trust an SM420 with worn synchros and bearing noises over a “built” NV4500 any day of the week.

Can probably tap the face of the NV4500 to except the SM420 bellhousing. Have done it for SM465 bellhousings a few times. Can keep your clutch linkage and everything the same that way just need a new hole in the floor and a shorter driveshaft

Yea they have that old all metal feel to them. It is a tough one to ki.ll . Hope you have like couple buddies to lift it. Both of those transmission is robust

sm420 is unbelievably easy to rebuild. do it on a tail gate with basic hand tools.
