@thecuriousmaverick: On August 14th 2017, I entered the U.S, as a grad student. The first month was… fantastic. Statue of Liberty. Cookie dough. Roller skating… everything still felt magical. Until it didn’t anymore. As a student, you quickly realize there’s no one to cook, clean, or take care of you. You gotta do it yourself. Then, you graduate and realize: I gotta find a job, or at least a volunteer role within 90 days, or else I have to leave the country. You find a job somehow, and you relax for a bit. But soon, the H-1B lottery comes up. And you have a 1 in 4 chance of getting picked. Let’s say you’re lucky and you do get picked. Now, if you hate your job and you want to quit, you can’t. Your stay is dependent on your job. Still, you push through, get a visa through your company and file for a green card. But as an Indian, there’s a long line. A 100-year line actually. In these 8 years, I’ve been a student, corporate employee, part-time employee, self-employed. I’ve worked as a product manager, author, entrepreneur, and even as a data scientist intern for a company in New York. Lived in New York, Seattle, San Francisco, even Hawaii. And even got to live in London and Sydney for a bit. Lived in houses with no one, as well as in houses with 22 others. I’ve cried over lost opportunities. Failures. Visa denials. Lost friendships. And I’ve fallen down a lot - once literally while trying to rollerskate. After all this, I’m grateful for it. This country makes you take agency for yourself and not sit around complaining. It makes you immune to rejections and no’s. It makes you worry less and try more. So I guess what I’m saying is: America sells you the dream, but you have to fight for it.
