@bitchyraccoon: I did my best but would love to have a better game plan for if this situation arises again. Drop some suggestions or experiences you’ve had! #etiquette #funeral #socialskills #introvert #WomenOfTikTok
I try to pre-plan a nice, authentic compliment for the deceased. “I’m so sorry, I’m going to miss hearing Barbara play the piano” “she was a sweet lady” “she had the best smile” “she made the best cookies”

I had 463 people come up to me at my husband's funeral... I don't remember what any of those people said me.

If you don’t know them, you introduce yourself with your connection—“hi, I’m Mary Smith— I worked with Jane for several years back at ABC company. She as so wonderful to work with— great lady…”. The end.

I shake hands and look them in their eyes and say I’m sorry. It will always be awkward, but I don’t think that will ever change

when my older brother passed there were plenty of his friends that I didnt know. I really liked hearing how much they met to them. or if it was friends I knew like my brothers "brothers" just hearing i love you sis was enough.

I’m a “holding your family in my heart” kind of girl.

Not that kind of Karen :
Introduce yourself and how you are connected: "I'm Karen, a friend of Jane's. I'm so sorry."

“I’m sorry for your loss” is perfectly acceptable. Family members in tbe receiving line will be feeling overwhelmed. Showing up to the funeral is a way to show that you care about them and support them, and they will appreciate the fact that you took the time to show up for them. You don’t need to say anything - your presence says a lot on its own!

I just hug them and move on. I’ve been on that receiving line more than once and that’s all I wanted was a hug.

You can just identify yourself I was Barb’s coworker. I went to school with Barbara. Barbara was my neighbor. Then you shake hands and move on. Or instead, you can say: I’m sorry. You have my condolences. I’m sorry for you and your family. You have my sympathy. It’s such a shame.

If you knew the deceased, say something like, “I’ll miss them so much” and give a strong hug.

I always tell those I know to let us know how we can help- and then follow with- I’m serious! Depending on the level of closeness I also let them know that when everyone else goes back to normal life that I’ll still be here if they need anything. We’ve unfortunately had more than our fair share it’s a hard time for everyone- just let them be human and be available if needed.

I always thought since the people in the receiving line are probably on the verge of tears, I just shake their hand or hug.
