We still have insects living here, not everything is destroyed with poison like in the US

German here: This is a normal thing at this time of year and I have known it since my childhood. Nobody forces you to buy something if it bothers you 😉

When animals go near your food that usually a good thing. I would be worried if they don't.

Ever since I learned that in late summer wasps run out of their normal food sources and that's why they go for the human foods, and that they are all bound to die in autumn, I feel for them and I just let them have their last short moments of joy. They don't sting if you don't hit them. And they are not considered to be a food safety risk as long as you don't ingest them.

That’s how you know, that the food is actually handmade, with fresh natural ingredients.

In Germany wasps are protected animals so it's not allowed to harm them. In the past there were "no wasps allowed" signs at every bakery. Unfortunately wasps didn't follow these signs.

Wasps are protected by law because otherwise we would just extinct them but they’re important for the ecosystem. Then they’re very clean insects so it’s nearly impossible that they contaminate the food with anything

In Germany, seeing wasps or bees around bakeries in summer is quite normal and not a sign of poor hygiene. Sweet pastries and cakes naturally attract them, especially when doors or displays are open. German food safety standards are very strict, so the presence of insects outside doesn’t mean the bakery is dirty. It’s more a seasonal nuisance than a hygiene problem, and many bakeries do try to reduce it with covers or traps.

In american bakeries the wasps would either freeze to death before reaching the food or die of chemical food poisoning when flying near it 🤣

Good lord, sugar attracts bees and wasps. Perfect clean insects and it has nothing to do with the hygenics of the bakery. Grow up

honestly it's not. insects shouldnt be near food, especially food in stores that it's about to be sold, it's a lack of consideration of food hygiene from the shop managers and absolutely not common in Europe at all

this is acceptable because the wasps don't harm anyone. it also isn't a health risk, I'm Greek and here you just cant contain or stop them. we just learn to live with the animals and insects that live here too. they get inside no matter how many nets etc you have.

I asked once why they let it happen. The answer is because they neither can prevent it, nor would it be safe for the workers to try and shoo them shoo them away. So in short: it doesn’t harm anyone.
