Always scares me turning down work. I’ve had a lot of $1500 jobs turn into 10’s of thousands of dollars in future work. But gotta have time to do it.

Yes sir, we’re in the exact opposite boat as you. We’re geared up for the smaller jobs and love them. We’re actually booked out the rest of the year with nothing but one, two, and three-day projects. It’s crazy!

I loaded up my machine for a land clearing job that pays $250 today, but it was 2 blocks away and I have a Chinese mini skid steer and no insurance 😂 the whole job took like 3 hours and we weren't working real hard because there was no reason to, only went out because my son wants to make some money and is too young for a real job

Min fluctuates between $1.5k during slow times to $2.0k during busier times. Small jobs also come with higher gross margin.

Small dirt outfit, typically get $800-$1000 for minimum charge work. There’s guys an hour north that will run $300 minimum day rate. Funny thing is both me and him stay busy at these rates

I do shallow utilities. Everything is by the foot. Split into dig/backfill (with pricing for 3, 4 and 5’ depths,) install (conduit or CIC,) compaction, extra lifts, rock adders and seeding. I don’t do mobilization on these. Road building is the same. When I do trail or pond style work I can do hourly rates but I have an upfront mobe charge that makes it work. My pond stuff is a bit smaller than yours.

I agree all jobs priced Lump sum. we calculate the price by unit price analysis and create a Schedule of values for billing. That said, then we invoice all listed work, we measure quantities, SOV gets converted to lump sum. Works nice for both parties. Private jobs only, Public works we have to follow bid specifications and payment requisition based on Engineers monthly approval.

I charge hourly to cover my ass if there’s any unforeseen circumstances, and too many variables in the large amount of different work I do. Day rate I use on quotes $1300-1500
