Ford tech here the new style phaser still fail, but at a less likely case oil change intervals are the biggest reason they fail

The oil supply to the phaser comes from the front cam journal on each side. There are 8 rotary seal , 2 for each cam. If the these seal a damaged or worn. The phaser oil supply will be insufficient and cause premature phaser failure.

oil starving possibly causing failure of part. from clogged orifice to low pressure pump getting weak, long way from the oil pump, good luck 👍

I’ve seen the updated ones fail all the time. I wouldn’t be surprised if they again in 30k miles

And poor maintenance will cause them to fail faster too and I see some staining happening in the motor. If you really wanna see phasers never fail. Clear flood crank it every morning before you do a full start
