I have haunted paths of my local cemeteries and churchyards, ever since I moved here six years ago. Mostly the one from the 1800s which was close to my old apartment. I love coming here, observing the graves beneath the bowed boughs of willows that weep more tenderly than any mourner. Angels in marble, sorrowful saints and worn epitaphs… how they watch me still, guardians of a peace I’ve never found elsewhere. Among a few cracked graves and moss-draped names, I have walked, I have wept, I have loved. Places like these are my sanctuaries. I’ve poured my thoughts into journals by their roots, traced the flights of crows between crosses, like prayers in motion. In this sort of stillness, I’ve found the rhythm of my own heart. There is so much beauty in decay, where the art of farewell is carved into every stone. I am blessed to have studied history before and to now study art history, where we go on excursions with our professors around the city, taking closer looks at the architecture of our churches, gravestone symbolism. We point at the reliefs, columns, vaults, arches, apsis, domes and details one would never notice or would never get the same backstory to, while walking alone. And to study something one has loved since young age is the most beautiful thing.
