Since 1995, Bruce Anschau and his wife Margaret had kept it tucked away safely in a drawer, adding to it slowly; a record of a connection that began through a child sponsorship program. The child, Edward Kankaka, is now 36 years old and was visiting Melbourne for a medical conference, as he now works as a globally-recognised HIV research scientist. But he was able to find time to visit Newcastle and say hello face-to-face. "Regardless of financial hardships, [my parents] have always been really passionate about making sure that we do still do our bit to help others," Heather said. The children were allowed to choose who they would sponsor. When he was just four years old, Heather's younger brother Tim picked Edward — the boy from Uganda who shared his birthday. "What drew us to him was his smile," Heather said. "He has the most incredible, huge smile, which he still has now." At the time, Edward had lost his father and was being raised by his grandmother. "Compassion reached out to us and shortly after, they told me I had a new sponsor from Australia." Compassion Australia is a Christian child development organisation, based in Newcastle. Every month, the Anschaus would send money to help fund child development centres overseas. Compassion Australia said the centres provided education and training, regular medical check-ups and snacks or meals for kids during times of learning. Edward has gone on to study at John Hopkins University — a renowned research university in the United States, building a career in HIV research. He said his passion stemmed from his own community, which was hit hard by HIV. "There's been remarkable progress," he said. Edward said while his hard work has established him in life, the sponsorship gave him the foundation to succeed.
