(Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 4, pg. 250-251 and Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 4300) Although some have questioned its authenticity, Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has defended this chain, especially since its purport is well supported. (Lisanul Mizan, vol. 4, pg. 181. Also see: Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 6467 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2818) The gist of the Hadith in question is as follows: A person worshipped Allah for five hundred years on a mountain top. Allah Ta’ala would provide for him water and a pomegranate daily. He had passed away while prostrating to Allah. In the Hereafter Allah Ta’ala will say to him to enter Jannah through his mercy. This person will tell Allah, rather [I will enter Jannah] through my actions. He will then find his actions to be far inferior when compared to the mercy of Allah Ta’ala. Jibril (‘alayhis salam) then said to Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), “O Muhammad! Everything only occurs through the mercy of Allah” The message in this Hadith is: that a person will only attain Jannah and salvation from Jahannam by virtue of the mercy of Allah Ta’ala and not his deeds.
