NVIDIA even had to refund hundreds of millions of dollars because of failing processors. And somehow, they kept going. There’s a moment in this conversation where Jensen describes betting half of the company’s remaining money on a strange abandoned machine that nobody else wanted to buy because it was “the only idea we had.” They knew if the next chip failed, the company was dead. No backup plan. No proven roadmap. No certainty it would work. Just conviction. What’s remarkable is that even through all of that, Jensen never stopped believing there was something much bigger underneath the technology they were building. Years before AI exploded into the mainstream, NVIDIA was pouring billions into CUDA — a computing architecture almost nobody understood and Wall Street largely dismissed. For nearly a decade, the bet looked wrong. But Jensen believed that if you could break massive problems into thousands of tiny computations and solve them simultaneously, it would fundamentally change computing forever. Then a small group of researchers started using NVIDIA gaming chips to train neural networks. That changed everything.
