@firefighter.interview: This is one of those questions where people love to give a simple answer. They try to make it black and white. You have 3-4 minutes to answer each question and set yourself apart from the pack! You need to work this out for the panel… don’t just say yes or no, if it was unsafe or illegal. That’s what everyone says… Do you think their officers are out there giving unsafe orders intentionally? Do they expect you to be their eyes and ears on the fire ground? I would hope so! Walk them through what that looks like. Tell them you understand how a fire scene should work, and how to work as part of that team. Let them know you understand how to be a good subordinate but also a thinking firefighter at the same time If you need help, check out my book. The Complete Guide to the Firefighter Interview, available on Amazon. It has all the strategies I teach my private coaching clients, to help you land your dream job! #interviewtips #firefighter #ems #interviewquestions #firefighterinterview
the answer should always be yes but with an explanation: You inform them that without a doubt if the order you are given is known to be illegal, unethical, or unbecoming of what is expected in the fire service and would violate the trust the community places in us, then I would disobey that order and depending on what was asked of me, follow appropriate chain of command to report the incident properly, however that being said I also understand there are orders I may think I should disobey without knowing the full context behind it, and understand that every scene is dynamic and constantly changing, therefore in all instances where I would disobey an order, I will first make sure in a quick an efficient manner, that disobeying the order would not inadvertently put any of the crew or community at risk as an emergency scene is no time to have an ego when seconds matter.

A prepared answer is nice but don’t overthink it. Too many people in interviews try sounding like an intellectual and come off as pretentious. Genuine well formed answers work best.

Best answer is “I would trust my Captain but If it’s outside my scope of practice, unethical or illegal I would disobey an order.”

I answered the unsafe version in an interview i said” the officer was put in his position because of his skill set and training. I would follow the order because maybe he saw something or knew something I didn’t that was vital to task a hand and if I had a question about it, I would ask him/her later in a non-confrontational way what they saw that I didn’t and therefore maybe I would learn from it”

I answered “ the scene is nonplace for dissobedience or arguing and safety comes in using everybody and their eyes. Something unsafe needs to be reported but not argued” And im guessing that was wrong by the look on their faces leading into the next question.

I will obey said orders and make every attempt to complete my given mission ereyone on scenes main priority is safety So there is a line between unsafe and wreckless we are always 90% of the time in unsafe environments but if the order is wreckless and could potentially cause loss of life or limb thats a hard no for me

I'd say it depends on how petty and how much of a good ole boy system is being run first...because everyone knows leadership is rife with people who will find a way to make your life hell for disobeying whether youre right or wrong

I would say I have seen bad calls and what they can cause, if the order is going to put myself, my brothers or sisters, or the public in danger then it is an order I can not and will not obey as a firefighter it is our responsibility to protect ourselves and those we sign up to protect first and foremost.

Understand that everyone has a responsibility for their personal safety. If you see something say something. Repeat the order to make sure you heard it correct/he didn’t make a mistake and offer an alternative if need be. Safety is always first at the end of the day

“I understand Fireground Operations and Chain Of Command. Its through my understanding of these that everyone here also knows every call is a dyanamic and every changing environment and no one person alone can know everything. Its also for that reason I cannot give you a straight yes or no as each situation is dynamic. I will attempt to faithfully execute all orders given to me to the best of my ability while keeping in mind my training and the safety of those around me and should a situation arise where I find an order unsafe based on my observation I would bring it to the attention of my superior in hope of either clarification or modification of said order.”

My answer to that question would be no, if I were to disobey an order, then it becomes a legal and liability issue

i work in corrections, *ive been working about 9 months before i went to the academy* the instructor asked the class what we would tell someone if we were tasked with grabbing all extra towels and they say they are using their extra as a prayer rug, i gave the "right answer" which was give him an request for interview. but then i said, if the guys getting pissed im just gonna let it go, he was like "so youll disobey a direct order?" everyone gasped and was like "oooooohhh" i told him "im not fighting a guy over a freaking towel.." he backed up and was like wait a minute you are right, someome tried explaining it, and he was like no im with him on this now, im not fighting someone over a towel that would be hard to justify 🤣

As a person who sits on hiring panels the best answer is; when it is a decision that will 100% end my life or someone else’s and is blatant negligence, illegal, or comprises the integrity of the department’s values.
