Most pitchers panic when they're getting hit. Here's the four-step diagnostic I actually run. Step 1 — Count quality: Am I giving up hits in hitter counts or pitcher counts? Hitter counts mean I'm already behind before they swing. The fix is working ahead. If they're hitting me in pitcher counts, it's not a count problem — move on. Step 2 — Execution: Am I actually hitting my spots? If I'm missing locations, nothing else matters. Fix command on the fastball first. If I'm hitting my spots and still getting hit, go to step three. Step 3 — Sequence: Is my pattern backwards? Most hittable pitch and location early. Least hittable pitch and location late. That's the rule. In 0-2 and 1-2 counts, the penalty for a ball in play is steep. That's when I want my nastiest stuff. If I'm throwing my most hittable shapes with two strikes, that's where they're getting me. Step 4 — Pattern recognition: They've figured out my approach. I look at what's getting hit hard vs. soft, in vs. out — and I flip the whole order. They're punishing hard stuff late? Start hard, finish soft. They're punishing soft stuff late? Start soft, finish hard. The pattern they're sitting on disappears the second you flip it. Most guys never get past panic.
