@scalingstories: u/politicsaitahelp My dad was furious when he found out my younger brother was gay, and while he couldn’t kick him out or disown him, he made his life as miserable as possible while he was under his roof. Dad recently passed away, and my younger brother wants to destroy Dad in the eulogy, so I think I need to ban him from the funeral. remember guys, death doesn’t automatically absolve someone of the harm they caused. you don’t owe peace to the dead if they never gave you peace while still living

Let's not forget that OP said the fallout would affect HIM and his brother(Austin) not Ben. So basically Ben wanted to understandably lash out but it would just and up affect OP more than the dead father, so no I will not let you read that eulogy😒😒

Ben should have given the speech without showing it to his brother

the problem wasn't ben speaking on the abuse. OP said the eulogy was quite vulgar and he also stated that he didn't think it would look good on BEN, not that he wanted to save their father's face

I get the brother wanting to speak his truth but like OP said he gon do that shit n leave his family who still lives there gon have to deal with it… if he wanted closure he should’ve said that shit to the one who caused him pain not cause pain for others

I will say this: funerals are often for the living instead of the dead (speaking from experience). Giving a whole speech trashing the person only does more harm to the person giving the speech than the one who passed. Not allowing the brother to give a speech is what was best for the brother and for everyone (not the dad). You won’t get closure from that

ben doing it solo looks bad on ben and wouldn't accomplish what ben truly would want. the whole family not saying a damn word casts the negative light on the dad like it should.

I think the brother's husband talking to OP about the brother's plans shows that this is concerning, I really don't think making a scene would be real closure in any way and might just do more damage than good

Why does dad has to be made into a good guy just because he’s dead?

Just because you pass doesn’t mean the reality of the damage you caused in life goes away. He’s going to share his story regardless…

Last comment nailed it!! I was thinking the same, none of the kids or wife said anything... Even if the dad was important to the community, outsiders are going to think "what kind of man he was behind closed doors that no one has anything good to say"... I'm glad Ben got what he wanted, in a way

Look a funeral is never for the dead. It’s always for the living. This is his last chance to face his demons and just let it out. Do not rob this from him. Your father had no problem being who he was and neither should you. What he did has nothing to do with you unless you cover it up cause eventually it will make the light of day.

i’m not fully thru it but the speech he wanted to give isn’t for “closure” it’s literally just for exposure since he’s airing it out to a whole lot of people, he can be mad but that wouldn’t be just messing up the funeral for his dad, it’d be messing it up for everyone there just trying to grieve

I don't get to watch some people will wait until someone is dead to air out their laundry. if they wanted to do it they should have done that while they were still alive cuz that's the only real way ever see this actually doing anything positive. Just remembered that the dead can't answer for their crimes.

That last commenter nailed it cause NONE of the immediate family speaking at a funeral is an incredibly noticeable and loaded thing to happen. It shows disrespect in the most respect way but also in such a way that can’t be ignored because “His wife didn’t speak? What about his only daughter? His oldest son? Didn’t they have anything good to say about him?”

(MY OPINION) - I personally would’ve sided with OP here, it’s completely understandable why he wouldn’t have wanted the eulogy read out if it’s truly as bad as he says it was. I absolutely think the brother deserves to speak, own, & express how his trauma from his father the man who was supposed to love him more than anyone else treated him over a sexuality that’s out of your control. I also have no doubt in my mind had the younger brother said everything at the funeral be the wake it would’ve been him who looked like the “jerk” to community (not that is). Because it sounds like OP dad was seen as a “perfect man” & I doubt the brother is doing it to taint the image of his dad but finally get the peace and closure he deserves, it also would’ve left people questioning . The oldest is typically the one who always has to pick up the pieces but i more think it’s the designated “family manager / responsible sibling” cause ive seen the youngest siblings having to grow up fast. All in all im glad that they came to a compromise and everything worked out, I see both sides but personally I feel there’s a time and place & dont ruin your own reputation for the sake of giving Karma to someone who hurt you. (once again, my opinions)

The whole time it gave the vibe that no one but the mother did something to protect the brother. OP clearly shows an inner battle between the father he knew and the man that he really is
