Nah, they’re not denying they’ve got African blood… most Dominicans know that. It’s just that the word “Black” means something different in the U.S. than it does over there. In the States, “Black” is tied to a whole political and cultural identity, born out of slavery, segregation, and civil rights. But in the DR, people grew up with a mess of colonial color labels like indio, moreno, or mulato, and a lot of that got reinforced by trying to separate themselves from Haiti. So when a Dominican says they’re not Black, they’re not saying “I’m not African.” They’re saying “I don’t use your words to define who I am.
