the recyclers won't usually take railroad spikes or anything associated with the railroad. that's probably where that got started.

If you try and scrap them it is illegal. Doesn’t matter where they came from. Someone not tied to the railroad cannot just buy them from a supplier. People selling them on eBay and such are technically selling stolen property. Even if the track is abandoned, it still belongs to the railroad. Trespassing on rail property is a crime that will land you in jail very quickly.

Ok. How about 20’ of track that slid into a piece of private property owned by a family member. Tractor weights are expensive. Honest question because I know of 2 pieces of track and a handful of new cross ties.

Most of the rail workers just toss the plates and spikes in the ditch along the tracks. If they chuck them and littering old spikes, they should be subject to being cleaned up.
