What That Money Could Fund Instead • Erase SEPTA cuts and fare hikes – keeping buses and trains running. • 160,000 paid youth jobs every summer (at $1,320 each). • 2,100 teachers, nurses, or counselors (at ~$100k each). • 10,000 affordable housing vouchers ($21k each). • Neighborhood safety investments: lighting, clean transit hubs, community patrols. 3. What They Spend On Instead • Penn: $1B+ new research towers. • CHOP: $1.9B new campus expansion. • Drexel/Brandywine: $3.5B Schuylkill Yards redevelopment. • Jefferson: hospital acquisitions (Einstein, Magee, Abington). • Temple: stadium proposals, land grabs. That’s almost the same number as SEPTA’s $213 million deficit.” Step 3 — Make the Contrast “These institutions are building billion-dollar campuses and stadiums, while my bus line is being cut and my neighborhood schools don’t have nurses. If they can spend billions expanding, why can’t they contribute their fair share to the city that keeps them alive?” Step 4 — Demand an Answer “Why hasn’t City Council pushed for PILOTs (Payments In Lieu Of Taxes) like Boston has? Why is our leadership shielding these institutions while working people pay more and get less?” Step 5 — Lock It In “Will you commit to putting PILOTs on the table this year?
