Tipping is optional but tipping culture has gone out of control. But in the US tipping is 1000% optional don’t let anyone tell you otherwise

Servers make well below minimum wage. They rely on tips to survive.

Trust me, most Americans think it's ridiculous as well. Instead of paying employees a liveable wage they transfer that cost onto us consumers.

tipping is only required if someone served you. waiters/waitresses, bartenders, delivery people require tips. if someone just took your order at a counter, tip is optional and don't worry about it.

Waiters do not get paid minimum wage so it is important to tip 15-20%. Do NOT tip an automated process. Starbucks or “counter service “ is relatively new. I feel that’s more optional. I usually do tip $.50-$1 there. I also tip my maid service in hotel $5-$10 a day

many servers make $2.13/hour! and if your meal costs $200, i imagine the server wore better clothes, there were higher expectations, etc. typically a more expensive meal means higher demands for servers!!

Staff get underpaid and exploited because tipping culture exists, so therefore the customer has to supplement their wages. It’s absolutely ridiculous and doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world.

5% for abysmal service. 10-15% for okay. 20% for good, normal service. 25% for excellent service. More than that at your own discretion.

I respect all cultures. But American tipping culture just doesn’t make sense. The business model of running a restaurant just doesn’t make sense. It’s ONLY the service industry that’s like this yes? 1. Why don’t restaurants pay staff properly and add the 20% to the food prices? That’s what the rest of the world does, that’s what other industries do, an apple at the grocery store, the price includes staff wages proportionately built into the price. 2. Go to a restaurant and order $10 steak… vs same restaurant but order a $100 steak. The server’s job doesn’t change… still take your order and bring your meal out… why do I have to tip $18 more for the same service? It just doesn’t make sense.

Only tip at sit-down restaurants, bars, and barber shops. It’s not necessary at fast food places or coffee shops. Tipping sucks but unfortunately we’re stuck with it until a law is passed requiring restaurant owners to pay their waiters a higher wage.

Im American. Dont tip… tipping is a normalized way for the company to rip of their employees and its to shift the blame to the customers “well you need to tip” dont fall for the scam. Your taxes pay for that employees benefits and then your money also is required for their employees to survive.
