if you agree that no there really is no such thing as natural rights then there is no argument as to why anyone ought to care about the rights of immigrants. rights become political privileges which may be extended or retracted arbitrarily according to our political whims.

Human rights legislation was not written for the good days. No one needs to be told not to torture people when they are calm. It was written for the days we are angry, exhausted, frightened or vengeful. I and it was written as much to protect us as it was to protect them.

Most safety procedures and protocols are the same way. They were written into existence for one reason or another, and they’re almost always written in blood. Nobody thought terrorists would hijack planes and purposefully crash them into buildings, but the day after 9/11 it’s almost impossible for it to happen again.
