I love/hate Bertha. I enjoy a deeply flawed and nuanced character and I think they’ve kept to who she is with all the mistakes. We loved her in season one because she was the underdog but now she’s on top and doesn’t know when to let up. It makes sense 🤷🏻♀️

For me it's less a thing of 'Bertha is perfect and did no wrong' but more of a thing of 'this level of vitriol wouldn't be happening if Bertha was a man'. Like, yes she is a complex character with many, many flaws but we so rarely get that. It's so rare to see a ruthless woman in Tv shows that is supposed to be the 'hero' Bertha is Ruthless and cunning and she will get what she wants. She is just as bad as someone like Walter White and I love to see it. I'll never excuse her actions but I'll always defend the characters existence. She is terrible and that's perfect❤️

But doesn’t the husband piss you off more? Ok Bertha sucks cause she basically sold off her daughter BUT the freaking husband made the promise to his daughter to be on her side. To support her when she wants to marry for love. HE GAVE HER AWAY. Bertha of course pressured him but it was HIS choice. How dare make he HER the bad guy. I’m way more pissed off about him.

Gilded Age is fantastic but they don’t have the depth and the YEARNING tsitp has!!! I want to like Mariann and Larry but there’s just no chemistry 😮💨

This season was amazing! I’m feeling the same about Bertha and Larry. I wasn’t sure that he wasn’t going to swindle Jack, so relieved when things worked out for Jack. Agnes is one of my favorites. Loved the moments when she was tender with her grieving sister.

I think I tend to be somewhat sympathetic to Bertha because it is v clear for me how she has to bear different (and more harsh) consequences than her male counter part because of patriarchy. It’s like she was trying to win in a game that she can only ever get to second place… reached too high, compromised her values, and got burned. I think it is an internal dialogue many women still have today.

if Bertha were a man she could funnel all her ambition into business but she's a woman so she has to put all her ambition into the social climb. train daddy sacrifices business relationships to his ambition and we can overlook that. but Bertha sacrifices personal relationships and that we can't forgive.
