Unlike other vertebrae, the atlas has no body and no spinous process. Instead, it’s shaped like a bony ring, with anterior and posterior arches and large lateral masses. These lateral masses articulate with the occipital condyles of the skull, forming the atlanto-occipital joint, which allows the nodding ‘yes’ motion.
