Plain bad heroines by Emily Danforth and Mexican Gothic by Silvia Garcia-Moreno are some of my favorite contemporary gothic novels :)

Took this as an opportunity to review some of my reading after taking a gander at your curriculum——primarily for my own benefit, but the Academy tends to be a bit culturelocked & feel I can offer more language diversity FWIW. Bearing in mind Gothic themes are often encompassed by Schauerroman, Fantastique, Macabre, Decadent literature, & the detective novel.
Prototypes: Amadis of Gaul—Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo (1508); Dr. Faustus—Christopher Marlowe (1588); The Dutchess of Malfi—John Webster (1614); Bluebeard—Charles Perrault (1697); Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard—Thomas Gray (Poetry/1751)
Early Gothic to be aware of: The Devil in Love—Jacques Cazotte (1772); Der Geisterseher—Friedrich Schiller (1787);Der Blonde Eckbert—Ludwig Tieck (Short/1797); Caleb Williams—William Godwin (1794) Wieland—Charles Brockden Brown (1798)

YEEESSS!!! I remember when I first watched one of your YouTube videos where you were discussing your dissertation work. I immediately was like “wait ‘sinister hospitality’ is a major theme in gothic lit as well… 👀” I’m so excited to see any updates about this!!!

I know you've got Wuthering heights on the list, but I think Jane Eyre fits the genre too, as a gothic romance of the 19th C

If you’re reading Frankenstein, I’d highly recommend looking into some of Charles Brockden Brown’s novels. He’s generally considered by critics as the father of the American Gothic, so his work is a great primer on the development of the form during its shift across the Atlantic. Plus, as Brown’s an influence on Shelley’s work, it would complement your existing course material :)

I don’t know if it’s already part of your curriculum but I suggest you read Zofloya by Charlotte Dacre! I love 18th/19th century gothic lit and I found it refreshing to have a woman being the “monster” instead of the victim for once
