@ivaofappalachia: As requested and promised here is the first of MANY stories, tips, and tricks, that people used to survive during hard times and during the Great Depression. Mamaw and Papaw continued to live frugally their entire lives. We had apple trees, grapevines, fruit bearing bushes, and a garden so huge a neighbor even let us use a huge part of their unused land so that we could expand. (We let them use part of our property for a small driveway on the front of our properties.) The most important lesson is building a community and knowing your neighbors. Know your local farmers and bee keepers. Know who sells fresh eggs. Barter what you can offer. I was blessed beyond measure to be raised by Mamaw and Papaw and with the way of life they brought me up in. We never went hungry, we were happy, and those skills they taught me are always invaluable. Let's teach what we know and learn what we don't, together! #frugalliving #frugal #mountainlife #appalachianmountains #appalachia

I think social media is a great opportunity for people to network and build communities of bartering. Instead of getting on and complaining about what you don’t have, reach out and build communities. TT can be used in an effective and helpful way.

my grandma grew a garden, canned, sewed & chocheted. The Rosanne pattern was popular. I had the coat & the hat with holes for my pigtails.

It’s important for us to share tips & tricks from our depression parents & grandparents. My parents were born in 1921. My dad said his family about starved to death. My mother’s family didn’t have much but did better. Young adults these days have no idea.

My Dad lived through the great depression. He had 2 shirts and one pair of pants. One of the shirts was for church only. Their house was next to a cesspool, and they had a great garden with legendary onions.

My grandparents were all like that. When the depression started they didn’t notice much of a difference because they were already so poor.

I learned about preserving food, foraging, and sewing at my mom's feet. We were poor, but survived.

When I cleaned out my granny's house after she passed I found 100's of used shoestring in the cellar rafters. I guess you never know when you need something to tie something up with. 🤷🏽♀

I was the type of kid when all my cousins would be playing I’d be sitting in with my grandparents listening to stories and how to do things they had the bare minimum but I learned things that I still remember I’m from Kentucky so most live hard here

All those things are a good idea even today was not want not. People don’t realize they don’t need half what they have anyway. My grandparents just called all that usually stuff little pretties and dust collectors

My grandma would probably be considered a hoarder today, but, that woman could turn anything, into something else. I remember her using old candy boxes into either gift boxes, or jewelry boxes, stuff like that. It was cool!

Exactly like my App grandparents. Even after they became relatively wealthy, they continued living this way. Never wanted to go through it again.
